Congratulations to SMS Freeski’s Charlie Gnoza’ 21 on being nominated as Stratton Mountain School’s Student of the Week.
“This young man doesn’t skip steps, doesn’t make excuses, and doesn’t look for the easy ways out,” began Freeski Program Director Jesse Mallis, who presented Charlie Gnoza as Stratton Mountain School’s Student of the Week. “He stays positive and is relentless in the pursuit of his goals, and, upon reaching those goals, he sets higher ones.”
Some say Charlie gets his tenacity from his parents, who are two of the best Freestyle coaches in the country. Others claim that Charlie was simply born that way. Either way, his hunger for success is just one of the many reasons Charlie has been named to the U.S. 2021-22 Rookie Slopestyle Team and unanimously voted as our most recent Student of the Week!
As one of his coaches put it, “When we were in the gate at the Slopestyle National Championships at Copper this year, Charlie was on the bubble to make finals, and someone said, ‘If you clean that run-up, you should make finals.’ Chuck responded, ‘I’m not trying to make finals, I’m trying to win’— it was not a cocky statement, but an honest one.”
Following that interaction, Charlie put down one of the top qualifying runs in the event and held the lead in finals until the second run. And, while he may not have won the event, the points Charlie collected at Copper and Aspen were good enough to get him a nomination.
“We have been watching Charlie progress his skiing for the last few years. We are very excited to add him to the team and continue his journey to the elite level of Slopestyle and Big Air skiing,” explained the U.S. Slopestyle Pro Team Coach Skogen Sprang following Charlie’s nomination. “He brings many key qualities to the table, and we can’t wait to see where he can take the sport in the future.”
Congratulations on being named this week’s SOTW, but more importantly, we are all so proud that you have been nominated to the US Freeski Rookie Slopestyle team!
