Student Well-Being
Developmentally Appropriate Middle School Programming
The Full-Term and Winter-Term Middle School programming at SMS is tailored specifically to the learning needs of students in Grades 7 and 8. Beginning in the Fall, our Middle Schoolers participate in an overnight camping trip led by senior class mentors. Although we pride ourselves on our accomplishments in the classroom and on the hill, we are equally as proud of our diverse programming for our younger students that includes dedicated class advisors and opportunities for students to connect through diverse activities like Giants of the Gym and Middle School Fundamentals.
Student Centered Community Events
At the heart of our event planning lies our Student Council and within them our elected Student Leaders. This core group of students fully embodies the BEARS values and works together to advocate on behalf of all students at SMS. From school dances to prom to organizing support for our non-winter sport-related athletics teams, our community events rise from student choices, not those of the adults in the community. This organizational mindset is a key component of our work around building student voice and advocacy within their communities now and in the future.
All-School Advisory Program
Upon acceptance to the Stratton Mountain School, each student is assigned an advisor who takes on the roll of welcoming the student into our campus community and guiding them on their first steps towards experiencing all that SMS has to offer. In alignment with our student-centric principles and in building self-advocacy, students are ultimately able to change their advisor, whom they see as their trusted adult on campus. This program works with students on integrating the BEARS values into the student experience while also offering continual support for students as they navigate their path towards excellence in sport and academics.
The Wellness Committee
The Wellness Committee is a dedicated team of individuals who focus on working alongside faculty to help the students who need it the most. In addition to coordinating our school-wide multi-tiered systems of support for students on campus, this group works to create more specific interventions early for students who need additional support, whether that be through our licensed on-staff therapist, athletic training department, deepening partnerships with families, or through our Learning Center.
