Celebrating 50 Years!

Stratton Mountain School's 50th Community Celebration Weekend in June of 2022 was a blast! We held our inaugural Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, where we honored Kim Reichhelm '78, Juli Furtado '85, Heidi Voelker '87, Kristin Luckenbill '97, Ross Powers '97, and our founding families, The Tarinellis and the Hellmans. Afterward, we welcomed over 250 beloved guests for dinner, dancing, lawn games, camaraderie, and fireworks.

A little history...

In 1970, Warren Hellman and Don Tarinelli sought to provide their children with extensive ski race training and a superior academic program. The idea took off, and by 1972, Stratton Mountain School was born.

50 years later, SMS has become one of the most prestigious winter sports academies in the world. Founded on the mission of providing a unique environment that offers each student the opportunity to pursue excellence in competitive winter sports and college preparatory academics while developing strong personal values, these ideals remain the cornerstone of an SMS education today.

The 2021-2022 school year marked SMS' 50th Anniversary. In celebration of this special milestone, we pieced together our history from old newsletters, yearbooks, photos, and- most importantly – the memories of those who lived through those experiences. We welcomed the community to reflect on some of the remarkable achievements of the past and hosted events throughout the year.

Stratton Mountain School is an independent boarding and day school that focuses on college preparatory academics and competitive winter sports. Located at the base of Stratton Mountain, SMS is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools.
