U.S Nationals Qualifications for SMS Alpine alongside U16 Eastern Champs, U14 States

March 12, 2019

STRATTON—Four SMS Alpine Skiers have qualified for U.S. Nationals thus far, taking a quarter of the 12 spots allocated for both High School and Collegiate skiers in the Eastern Region. Olivia Holm `19, Lauren Abdow `19, Diego Holscher `20, and PJ Bovaconti `19 will race in New Hampshire’s Waterville Valley between March 23 and 26 following a strong season for all four racers. Overall, 50 men and women respectively will compete in Nationals—including National Team members, and likely a few SMS Alumni.

Holm’s Nor-Am Cup results throughout the year earned her a spot at Nationals, and overall she ranked 2nd in all of the GS qualification races throughout the season. Additionally, Holm has also qualified for U.S. Junior Nationals taking place at Waterville between March 27 and 29, competing against athletes both between 1998 and 2002, and has been invited to a U.S. Ski Team training camp at the Nationals venue. For Abdow, it was this season’s SG results that paved the way to Nationals. Holscher has also had a banner year, competing in Junior World Championships and Nor-Am Races earlier this year.

Announcements for Junior Nationals and U16 Nationals are yet to come following Eastern Championship races at the U16 level last weekend. In the first SG race of the Championships, the SMS Alpine Women stacked four athletes in the 10 ten, as well as two in the Men’s results. Tess Beyer `20 landed on the podium in 3rd, followed by Chloe Lathrop `21 in 6th, Mathilde Schwencke `21 in 8th, and Anna Davis `21 in 10th. Jay Poulter `20 earned 6th for the men, followed by Erik Holm `19 in 7th.

Poulter led the SMS results in the second SG race, finishing 2nd, and both Erik Holm and Schwencke finished third in their respective races followed by Lathrop in 7th. In the first Slalom race Poulter again won 2nd, with Lathrop taking 4th, Holm finishing 5th, and Jacqui Culver `21 placing 8th. Races continue today, so stay tuned!
