Student of the Week, February 12
February 12, 2020
Congratulations to Jude Fidel `24 for being recognized as the SMS Student of the Week!
Jude may be new to Stratton Mountain School for the 2020 Winter Term, but his dedication to striving for excellence both in the classroom and on the mountain has caught the attention of coaches and teachers alike!
“I have enjoyed getting to know Jude as a new student at SMS,” said one teacher. “His quirkiness and sense of humor bring an element of joy into the classroom. He has been working hard to improve his performance in Spanish and it’s great to see this type of positive energy!”
“Jude is a sophisticated and clever writer,” added another. “As many know, he won a Gold Key award for his short fiction piece, ‘The Stranger,’ in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, and will now be entered into National level judging.”
“I am really pleased with the way that this young athlete has progressed since coming to SMS,” said SMS Freeskiing Director Jesse Mallis, who nominated Jude for Student of the Week. “Not coming from a background much formal training when it comes to skiing park was without a doubt a big challenge and likely very intimidating for anyone joining the Freeskiing Program.”
“This young student-athlete entered as a Winter Termer, not knowing anyone on the team,” he continued. “Starting in a new place, not knowing anyone is intimidating for anyone, at any age. Nevertheless, this young man has been coming to training with a positive upbeat attitude, has been listening to his coaches, and has shown lots of determination. Lately he’s been stepping outside of his comfort zone, most notably during his Pup Cup match. He’s really made big strides in his skills in the park, learning both front and back 270’s, getting comfortable spinning off bigger jumps, and getting better at the fundamentals.”
“We all are impressed with how far he’s come in such a short amount of time here at SMS,” Mallis continued. “Finding a balance between academics and athletics is such a big piece of what this school is about, and this week, we’re recognizing Jude Fidel for the hard work he’s put into both. “
