Four SMS U14 Athletes Invited to Compete at Kandahar Junior Invitational
STRATTON—Four U14 athletes from Stratton Mountain School’s Alpine program have been invited to compete at the Kandahar Junior Invitational, hosted by Ski Club Les Houches in Mont-Blanc, France between January 10 and 12, 2020.
Students Sophie Davis `24, Mary Martin `24, Bronson Culver `24, and Matteo Bonivento `24 are the first SMS skiers to be invited to this international event. Athletes are selected based on the past season’s final standings from U14 States, Eastern Championship, and CanAm competitions.
This year will mark the sixth Kandahar Junior Invitational hosted by France’s Chamonix Mont Blanc, where the world’s elite downhill skiers regularly compete for FIS World Cup races. The Junior Invitational will bring together the best U14 teams from Europe and the USA. Sixty mixed teams consisting of 120 male athletes and 120 female athletes will compete over three days in two “géant pro” runs, two slalom runs, and two giant slalom runs. Each race will have it’s own rankings and awards but will also contribute to a team ranking, for which the winning team will earn the coveted “Kandahar Junior Trophy.”
Stratton Mountain School is an independent boarding and day school that focuses on college preparatory academics and competitive winter sports. Located at the base of Stratton Mountain, SMS serves students in grades 7 – 12.
