DesFosses and Tobey Claim First SMS Freestyle Gold Medal Runs of the Season at Bristol Mountain

January 07, 2020

STRATTONThe competition season is finally underway for SMS Freestyle after the team’s first six scheduled events were canceled in Sweden, Maine, and Colorado, and it’s off to a good start with gold medal runs for student-athletes Jolie DesFosses `23 and Gavin Tobey `22 over the course of the weekend.

Hosted by Bristol Mountain Resort, the Eastern Freestyle ‘A’ Opener kicked off with a fast and fun course despite warm temperatures and rain. Saturday’s event schedule consisted of a single run mogul event in the morning where DesFosses started off the day with a top ten result, finishing 9th for the women, and Tobey skied onto the men’s podium to finish third. Spencer Latterman `20 and Elliot Deleger `22 joined Tobey in the top ten, finishing in 7th and 8th place respectively. The Boyle brothers earned themselves personal best finishes: Wyatt Boyle `23 finished 11th overall and 2nd place in the U15’s, and Luca Boyle `22 was 14th overall.

On Saturday afternoon there was a dual mogul event, featuring head to head competition. DesFosses battled her way to a career-best first place finish while a determined Tobey skied into 3rd place. Latterman and Deleger also had a great duals event, finishing 5th and 8th respectively.

Finally, Sunday’s event was a two-run single mogul event. Tobey put down a solid first run but left room for improvement going into the second run. And that he did, receiving the highest turn scores of the event and earning himself a first-place finish by over 2 points!

Gavin continued the momentum that earned him Most Improved Eastern Freestyle last year, with the highest turn scores and a crazy determination to succeed,” said SMS Freestyle Director Deb Newson. “Jolie trained hard all summer and this is a great confidence boost for her heading into the regional tour—I’m sure there’s more to come.”
