SMS Mountain Biking Claims Western New England Title for Third Consecutive Year
STRATTON—The SMS Mountain Biking Team claimed the title of Western Division Overall Season Champion this season following the Team’s 4th place finish at the final race of the season in Franklin Falls, New Hampshire on Saturday, November 2. Asa Chalmers `20 and Mathias Boudreau-Golfman `21 also earned 2nd and 3rd respectively in the individual season points standings while Fin Bailey `23, Janne Koch `22, and Boudreau-Golfman were ranked #1 this season for their respective grade levels.
“The League has continued to raise the competitive level which pushes our team to think about how they can improve to stay at—or near—the top,” said SMS Nordic Director Matt Boobar. “It was fantastic to win the Western Division Overall Title.”
In Franklin Falls, Chalmers led the SMS results with his 6th place finish in the Boys A Race, followed by Boudreau-Golfman in 7th, Bailey in 8th, and Koch in 9th. Sage Freeman `21 finished 3rd in the Girls B Race while Chip Freeman `23 placed 15th in the Boys B Race.
“It was awesome to see other teams in top form and hammering their way in front at Franklin Falls,” Boobar continued. “Congratulations to every team and the more than 250 riders who compete in the league!”
Competing in the Northern New England High School Mountain Bike Race Series, SMS athletes competed in each of the three categories: A, B, and C descending by ability level. In this series, however, the top five racers score regardless of gender or race category. A racers can score up to 100 points, B racers up to 80, and C racers up to 60 depending on where they finish among the crowd.
“The SMS Mountain Biking Team continued to grow this year with 100% participation by the Nordic team at some of the races!,” Boobar concluded. “We like to employ the NNTMBS as a training tool to prep for our key winter races, get in a fun, very intense workout, while also exposing our student-athletes to different sports that help them stay mentally fresh and create a greater base of athleticism.”
Stratton Mountain School is an independent boarding and day school that focuses on college preparatory academics and competitive winter sports. Located at the base of Stratton Mountain, SMS serves students in grades 7 – 12.
