Student of the Week, October 3
Congratulations to Asa Chalmers (SMS Nordic `20) for being recognized as the SMS Student of the Week!
In the classroom, Asa has been described as “diligent and timely” and he has been all-over the college admissions process this Fall. According to Nordic Director Matt Boobar, he even asked if the team could reschedule their ‘fun’ uphill run test as he’d be away at a college visit and didn’t want to miss it.
Asa has been trending well athletically too and steadily improving, Boobar said, but what impressed his coaches most was Asa’s skill and tenacity on a mountain bike.
“Most of us want to train our weaknesses and race our strengths,” he began, “but what if you have to race your weakness against your top competitor’s strength? That’s what happened to him.”
In a race at Vermont Academy Asa went head-to-head with another top racer and put in an amazing effort, exemplifying Stratton Mountain School’s BEAR acronyms: bravery, effort, accountability and respect (or, as Boobar phrased it: bravery, effort, awesome, robot—a recent STEM class project of Asa’s—and ‘send it.’)
