SMS XC Races at BBA

October 08, 2019

STRATTON—The Stratton Mountain School Cross Country Running team raced the course at nearby Burr and Burton Academy on Tuesday, October 8 and—though the team does not count towards the official Marble Valley League results as an invited guest—the team accrued a number of great finishes.

Mathias Boudreau-Golfman `21 led the SMS results with a first-place finished, followed by Gavin Blauch `20 who finished third. Fin Bailey `23 came in seventh, Janne Koch `22 placed tenth, Asa Chalmers `20 finished twelfth, and Chip Freeman `23 came in fifteenth. In the girls’ race, Sage Freeman `21 finished fifth.

It is important to make sure that we are getting our minds prepared and trained for the arena of competition outside of ski season,” said SMS Cross Country Coach George Forbes. “We get some of that from our mountain bike races too, but changing it up with running will also help prepare for the diversity of strengths and weaknesses our athletes will encounter depending on race-style, conditions, and length. We have some athletes who are much stronger bikers than runners—and vice-versa—so we try to put ourselves in different conditions and styles of competition in the fall to help train our minds and prepare for the challenges ahead.”

Stratton Mountain School is an independent boarding and day school that focuses on college preparatory academics and competitive winter sports. Located at the base of Stratton Mountain, SMS serves students in grades 7 – 12.
