Lathrop, Poulter Named to 2019-2020 VARA Team
STRATTON—Stratton Mountain School students Chloe Lathrop `21 and Jay Poulter `20 have been named to the Vermont Alpine Racing Association’s 2020 Team in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the 2018-2019 season.
The Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) selects its annual team members in recognition of their achievements in a number of events throughout the prior season including the VARA State Championships at the U16 and U14 levels, the Vermont Cup Series, and the George Tormey VARA Spring Series as well as Eastern Championship races at the U14, U16, and U19 levels.
“We are all excited for our SMS athletes who have been named to the VARA Team,” said SMS Alpine Director Mike Morin. “Being named to the VARA Team is an important step in their athletic development and shows how SMS athletes continue to win competitions in every step of the competition pipeline. We are all proud of these skiers and wish them continued success.”
Lathrop, of Londonderry, VT, began the 2019 season with a pair of top-ten Slalom finishes at the National Performance Series at Burke Mountain alongside 5th and 16th place finishes in Giant Slalom at the same event. Later that month Lathrop claimed gold both overall and among the U16 athletes at the Sugarbush Vermont Cup. She once again topped the podium at the VARA Sync Vermont Cup slalom final and later led SMS in the U16 Women’s State Championship races, winning 2nd in GS and 5th in SL.
After taking 6th and 7th in a pair of SG races at Eastern Championships Lathrop qualified for U16 Nationals, where she went on to finish 15th and 18th in Super G.
Poulter led SMS at the 2019 National Performance Series with second and third place podiums in the Slalom races and a fourth-place finish in the second Giant Slalom race, and those results earned him the opportunity to represent the U.S. Ski Team at the 2019 Opa Cup in Meiringen, Switzerland. At the Sugarbush Vermont Cup Poulter placed 1st among the U16 athletes and 2nd overall. He went on to claim 3rd in GS at the VARA U16 State Championships, and later 6th and 2nd in a pair of SG races at Eastern Championships. Those results earned him a spot at U16 Nationals where he finished 2nd overall, 2nd in Super G, 3rd in Slalom, and 4th in Giant Slalom.
Congratulations, Jay and Chloe!
