VARA Selects Olivia Holm `19 as Recipient of Shelley Glover Award
The award, presented annually to a young individual who exemplifies the qualities that Shelley Glover was best known for, includes a $1,000 scholarship which will be awarded at the VARA Gala on October 19, 2019.
According to organizers, the recipient is an athlete who “shows compassion for those around them who are in need, who reaches out to and enjoys working with younger individuals, who displays dedication and commitment to academics, who inspires fellow athletes to reach their potential, raise their expectations, and exceed their limitations, who skis with passion, power, and determination, tenacity, perseverance, and drive through their training, and who enjoys the journey that leads to success.”
“I am very excited to have been selected for the Shelley Glover award,” Holm said. “I have grown and developed as a skier within Vermont, and to be recognized as an athlete who embodies similar qualities to Shelley is an honor.”
Holm’s senior year at Stratton Mountain School had a number of highlights, which only increased as the season drew to a close. In March Holm enjoyed not one but two top-ten finishes in a quartet of North American Cup (Nor-Am) races in Maine, winning 9th in both Super-G races to secure her spot in the top ten. Soon after, Holm was one of five SMS Alpine athletes to compete at Alpine Junior Nationals, claiming three podium finishes in three days: 2nd in Giant Slalom, 3rd in Super-G, and 2nd Overall. At Eastern Cup Finals, she won Gold in GS among the U19 athletes as well as 4th overall.
In the coming year, Holm will be “highly involved in all U.S. Ski Team Programming” according to SMS Alpine Director Mike Morin.
“Olivia had an outstanding season this year from a performance standard,” Morin said. “More importantly, her attitude, effort, and kindness to those around her is something that sets her apart. We are very excited to see her get this award and wish her luck as she pursues her dream to make the US Ski Team.”
“I would not be where I am today if not for the support from everyone I have met within VARA,” Holm concluded. “Looking forward, I plan to continue pushing myself and those around me to the highest level while enjoying every moment this special sport has to offer.”
