SMS Girls End Season with Victory in Otter Valley

May 27, 2019

STRATTON—The Stratton Mountain School Girls Lacrosse team won a 10 v 10 game against Otter Valley, ultimately ending the game 12-7 in favor of SMS. The reduced team size, from 10 to 12 (Otter Valley is a Club Team), added a twist to the game but the SMS girls adjusted well according to Head Coach Emily Daly

“It was a great opportunity to give our younger players some extra playing time,” Daly said. “Seniors and team captains Lauren Abdow `19 and Sophia Holm `19 played the entire game in what was their last high school lacrosse game. It was great to come away with a win to close out the season.”

Having fewer players on the field allowed for cleaner passing and more efficient use of the space, allowing Abdow to make beautifully executed passes from midfield to offensive player Caitlin Collins `21 at one point in the game. Overall, Abdow scored seven goals—possibly the most for a single player in any of the team’s games this season, according to Daly.

“When you watch Lauren approach the goal as a spectator, you won’t know what trick is up her sleeve,” she explained. “But as her coach, I always know that she has a well-calculated plan to score for her team.”

“Lauren is a talented attack player who over the years has orchestrated many, many artful goals,” she continued. “Her significant presence as our center midfielder and having served three years as a captain for the team will be hard to replace.”

Collins played both midfield and attack and came away with four goals, while Emilia de Jounge `23 also scored. Holm and Anna Davis `21 had great games defensively, complete with unexpected interceptions and great turnovers.

“Sophia has offered a personal style to playing defense that is unique and will be remembered for years to come,” Daly said. “Her unpredictable approach to playing defense keeps her opponents guessing and—when you least expect it—there she is on a turnover taking back possession with a fiery, dramatic edge.”

Upon return to campus, the girls rang the bell on the center circle for all of campus to hear to celebrate a victory to conclude their season. Congratulations to all!
