Student of the Week
Congratulations to Joey Okesson (Snowboard `20) for being recognized as the SMS Student of the Week!
Joey’s hard work in the classroom this year has really paid off according to his teachers, and it’s clear that the Snowboarder has committed himself to becoming the best he can be—both on the mountain and in the classroom.
Joey received his first World Cup invite this Fall, and went on to compete against many of the top halfpipe riders in the world on Dec. 6, placing 28th. Around the same time, he was one of the top-placing U.S. Junior athletes during the Nor-Am competitions at Copper Mountain. Those impressive results culminated in an invitation to the FIS Halfpipe Junior World Championships in Leysin, Switzerland at the end of this month where he’ll represent the U.S.
This Student of the Week isn’t just talented when it comes to snowboarding, however. This Fall Joey joined the soccer team and “hustled any chance he got” said his coaches. In his downtime, Joey can often be found in the Air Awareness Center “tearing up the skate park and showing that he’s a talented all-around athlete.”
One of his teachers describes Joey as the “go-to guy” in Math, and another notes that he has “really stepped it up academically.”
“He is always so excited to share his results and upcoming competitions with me,” they continued, “which really shows that he is so grateful for the opportunities that Stratton Mountain School has given him.”
