SMS Freeski, Snowboard Students Dominate Stratton Rail Jam Despite Sub-Zero Temps
January 23, 2019
Plenty of Stratton Mountain School skiers and snowboarders populated the podium at the second Stratton Rail Jam of the season, sponsored by the USASA Southern Vermont Series. Originally scheduled for Sunday, heavy snow and high winds led to the event being rescheduled to Monday morning, and—though the temperature was projected to be an icy -16 (-35 with wind chill)—SMS Freesking and SMS Snowboarding students braved the chill to dominate the results.
“The van thermometer read -13 and winds were gusting,” said SMS Freeskiing Director Jesse Mallis. “This wasn’t the ideal weather for a rail jam, but we went out and we jammed.”
Four SMS Freeskiers won gold for their age group, including Durham Jones `23 (1st, Freeski 10-13 Boys), Max Hasaj `21 (1st, Freeski 14 and Over Men), Emilia de Jounge `23 (1st, Freeski 14 and Over Women), and Zylis Hawkins `20 (1st, Freeski Open Class Men). Peyton Grey `20 placed 7th among the Freeski Boys age 10-13, and in the Freeski Men 14 and Over Xavier Schmid `22 took 2nd, Matt Madden `22 came in 4th, Bode Raffa `22 placed 5th, and Alex Wasyliko `22 won 6th. The Freeskier’s next take on Mount Snow this weekend for a trio of USASA Slopestyle competitions.
Connor Kelly `24, Connor Cavanagh `23, and Charlie Bergantino `22 led SMS Snowboarding among the Boys 10-13, placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. Skylar Koeppe `24 won 3rd for the Girls 10-13, and Jamie Pila `20 and Victoria Powers `21 dominated the Girls 14+ with a one-two punch. Zeb Powell `19 placed 1st in the Men’s Open Class for Snowboarding, followed by Derek Conti `20 in 3rd.
Congratulations to all!
