SMS Boys' Soccer Team Lose Hard Fought Opening Game

September 12, 2018
The SMS boys soccer team opened the season with a 4-1 loss to skilled Division 1 Mt. Anthony Union High School team.  SMS started the game very strongly and controlled play for the first 20 minutes with exceptional passing.  SMS was the first to score 19 minutes into the first half on a perfectly placed direct kick right outside the penalty box by Lucas WiacekMAU tallied an equalizer five minutes after the Wiacek goal.  For the remainder of the first half play was even with both squads creating scoring opportunities.  At the half the score was tied at 1-1.  In the second half, SMS was forced to play in the defensive half of the field too often as MAU improved their passing.  Ultimately the pressure applied by MAU proved successful leading to 3 second half goals resulting in the final score of 4-1.
It was a solid start for an SMS team which had not played together for very long prior to the first game.  Some individual highlights included stellar defense by Erik Holm and Carlo Muscarella, solid midfield/offensive play by Philip Farnsworth and George Bond, and a very respectable effort by Tatsuki Mihara in his first game in goal.
SMS has two more games this week; Thursday 9/13 at Twin Valley, and Friday 9/14 at Burr and Burton.
