January 24, 2018

Local Stratton Mountain School senior, Caroline Claire (Manchester Center, VT), has been named to the U.S. Olympic Freeski Team for Slopestyle. She will travel to PyeongChang this February for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Caroline’s 3rd place finish in the recent Mammoth Slopestyle World Cup, which was an Olympic qualifier event, helped secure her spot on the team. U.S. Ski and Snowboard announced the team selections on Tuesday.

We are so proud of Caroline for having been named to the Olympic Freeski Team. Her skiing has progressed tremendously during her time at Stratton Mountain School, and she has worked hard to get where she is today. To have the honor of representing her country on the world’s largest stage is well deserved,” stated Stratton Mountain School Freeskiing Program Director, Jesse Mallis.

Caroline is one of four women selected to represent the United States in the Women’s Slopestyle competition at the Olympics next month. She qualified for the team through a series of events beginning last February and concluding this past weekend in Mammoth, California.

Stratton Mountain School’s history includes forty-two Olympians and sixty-six Olympic Team placements in Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, and Snowboarding. Caroline will be the first Freeskier from the school to compete at the Olympic level and the first Stratton Mountain School student to represent the United States at the Olympics while enrolled in the school.

“We are pleased to have Caroline representing the United States and Stratton Mountain School at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. The entire SMS community is excited for Caroline, as she has earned the opportunity to compete at the highest level of her sport,” stated SMS Headmaster, Chris Kaltsas.

Stratton Mountain School is an independent boarding and day school that focuses on college preparatory academics and competitive winter sports. Located at the base of Stratton Mountain, SMS is accredited by NEASC, is a member of NAIS, and is an official U.S. Ski & Snowboard Development Site.
