SMS Soccer Defeats Twin Valley
October 10, 2017
The Stratton Mountain School Boys’ Soccer team hosted Twin Valley on October 7th in front of an enthusiastic Parents’ Weekend crowd. The game did not disappoint, as SMS handed Twin Valley its first defeat of the season in an exciting 2-1 victory.
The first half featured dominating runs by both squads. Twin Valley came out of the gate with high energy and a flurry of shots in a dominant first 15 minutes. SMS keeper, Michael Rose, kept the boys in the game with several great saves. The tide turned and SMS responded with extended pressure and dominant play, but the Twin Valley keeper and the goal posts prevented several good shots from going in. The half ended in a 0-0 tie.
The second half started with Twin Valley applying heavy pressure from the outset, and about ten minutes in, their left wing popped in a goal on a nice cross from the right. SMS picked up its intensity with a barrage of shots by Lucas Wiacek, Adam Witkowski, and Henrik de Jounge, tying the score at 1-1. The goal inspired even more aggressive play by the defense, anchored by Liam Mooney, Mike Craig, Erik Holm, and Max Hasaj. With 16 minutes remaining, Hasaj forced a corner with an aggressive run. Lucas Wiacek then delivered a perfect ball to Mike Craig who roared in from the left back position and headed it in, giving SMS a 2-1 lead. The teams battled fiercely and evenly for the remainder of the match, which ended in a well deserved and satisfying victory for SMS.
The SMS Girls’ Soccer Team also won Saturday’s game against Twin Valley.
