Boys' Soccer Defeated by MAU in Overtime

October 05, 2017
The boys’ soccer team traveled to Mount Anthony Union High School (MAU) in Bennington, Vermont on Monday, October 2nd and engaged in a thrilling battle against a highly ranked Division 1 opponent. Despite a valiant effort, the team came out on the losing side of a 4-3 overtime game.
MAU started the scoring 18 minutes into the first half on a breakaway down the left side. Ten minutes later, Lucas Wiacek tallied SMS’ first goal after a skirmish in front of the net. MAU netted another shot before the half which resulted in a 2-1 MAU lead at intermission. 15 minutes into the second half, SMS tied the score on a beautiful header by Liam Mooney from a perfectly delivered corner kick by Lucas Wiacek. Five minutes later Wiacek broke free on a nice through pass by Riku Tatsuzuki and SMS took the lead 3-2. The teams battled fiercely for the final 20 minutes of the second half with the SMS defense, led by Liam Mooney, Erik Holm, Carlo Muscarella, and Carson Solaz, fending off many MAU attacks. 30 seconds away from an SMS victory, Mount Anthony squeaked a goal over the line and tied the game. In overtime, the teams played evenly with each having opportunities, but MAU scored the winning goal on a rebound of a beautiful save by SMS keeper Michael Rose who had made multiple great saves throughout the match.
The SMS boys played their best game of the season, highlighted by winning balls at midfield and keen passing throughout. Adam Witkowski, Henrik de Jounge, and Riku Tatsuzuki played extremely well at midfield, and the whole team should be proud of their effort and accomplishment against such a difficult opponent. SMS moves on to a game against GMVS on Thursday, October 5th followed by the Parents’ Weekend re-match against Twin Valley.
