Matt Boobar brings a plethora of endurance sports experience from a competitive, coaching, and educational background to SMS. Throughout his 25 years of coaching, Matt has been the Head Coach at the Holderness School and the Assistant Coach for Colby College. He has also been a 5 time team USA World Junior team coach, 9 time Head New England Junior nationals and 2020 Team USA Youth Olympic Games coach This provides him exposure to all aspects and levels of the sport. Matt was recognized as the NENSA Coach of the Year in 2009. In addition to coaching the Nordic team he created and coached the SMS mountain bike team to two undefeated seasons New England championships in 2017 and 2018. He is also a two-time World Champion and four-time National Champion in Xterra.


Patrick O’Brien `06, SMS T2 Team Coach

Pat O’Brien is an alumnus of the SMS class of 2006 and Dartmouth graduate and has returned for his 6th year coaching our eleven-person SMS T2 Team, which includes five U.S. Ski Team meters, multiple time Olympians and a Gold Medalist. Patrick stays busy helping oversee all aspects of the SMS T2 Team. Patrick’s experience as an athlete includes being an alum of SMS, captain of the Dartmouth Ski Team, NCAA All-American, and a four-year career as a professional athlete and World Cup competitor. As a coach, Patrick has been selected by USSA to work on trips to the Europa Cup and World Junior Competitions. 


Alex Jospe, Nordic Coach

Alex Jospe joins SMS in 2019, after 13 years as a volunteer coach for the Cambridge Sports Union junior ski team. She has been the head coach for Team Massachusetts at the Eastern Highschool Championships from 2013-2019, and age group coach for the New England Team at Junior Nationals in 2010 and 2017. Her skills combine a unique blend of motivation, adventure, technique coaching and goal setting to guide athletes to their highest potential.

In a different life, Alex has a Masters in Environmental Conservation from UMass Amherst, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Environmental Science from Colby College, which she has used to pursue a career doing environmental science with The Nature Conservancy and Haley & Aldrich, an environmental consulting firm. She finds that her analytical mindset, attention to detail, and positive attitude works well in both the corporate and the coaching worlds.

Her athletic endeavors have never strayed too far from the world of endurance sports, from captain of the Colby Nordic Ski Team to a prominent member of the US Orienteering Team from 2007 - 2016, and she tries to be a role model lifelong athlete.


George Forbes, Nordic Coach

George Forbes joins the SMS Nordic team following two seasons as a Winter Term coach both at SMS and with the West River Nordic program. George is an avid skier and sports photographer and, alongside coaching, also teaches photography at SMS in the Fall and Spring. He is helping to coach the SMS Cross Country Running and Baseball teams during the offseason.
