Freestyle Coaches

The SMS freestyle coaching staff provides a comprehensive curriculum that provides the acquisition of skills in freestyle necessary to be competitive skiers. This includes technical, physiological, sociological and psychological training and competition and equipment.

With accomplished athletes at every level of the sport, including Development, Regional, Junior Nationals, NorAms, Junior Worlds, U.S. Nationals, World Cup and the Olympics, Deb Newson brings over 25 years of freestyle coaching experience to Stratton Mountain School. Deb joined SMS in the spring of 2013 to direct a newly created full-time freestyle program. She was named the USSA Development Coach of the Year in 2010, a gold-level USSA Award. She has served as chairperson of USSA Eastern Division Freestyle-Freeskiing since 2002.

Sam Tarrant
Freestyle Head Coach

B.B.A.University of Southern New Hampshire - Business Administration

Sam has 11 years of experience coaching in the sport of freestyle. He was a top-ranked freestyle athlete in the Rocky Mountain Division and attended Lowell-Whitman, a private ski academy in Steamboat, CO. Sam joined the staff at SMS in 2013. He serves on the regional committee as the Programs, sub-committee chair and on on the US Ski and Snowboard mogul sub-committee.
