| | Stratton Mountain School, in collaboration with NENSA, is excited to announce an exciting new summer program at SMS.
SMS is opening up their summer training program to additional athletes who are looking for additional training during the summer months. The training program is an ideal opportunity for college skiers without access to a summer training group and coaching.
The goal is to have a dedicated group of high school and college age skiers training together for the summer. We will build an excellent aerobic base and work on specific strength. Each week will include at least one skate, one classic and one ski walking/bounding workout.
The SMS campus is ideally situated for summer training with easy access to great roller skiing and miles of trails. The fully equipped SMS gym and weight room will be available to Elite athletes for strength training, lactate testing, etc.
Additional skiers, such as 2006 Olympian Andy Newall, will join the Elite team at various times throughout the summer. SMS Nordic skiers will be in attendance all summer.
Stratton Mountain School coaches Sverre Caldwell, Poppet Boswell and Matt Boobar will lead the group throughout the summer. Members of the NENSA staff will help with coordination as needed.
Mini camps are scheduled to encourage training for athletes who can’t commit to the full summer of training. The SMS staff will try to set up home stays with local athletes for the elite weekend athletes in the program.

This program is designed to improve younger skiers’ (age 10-17) technique and fitness while training with the Elite Team, a group of high-level, dedicated skiers. Each Development Team athlete is expected to arrive eager to learn and improve his or her own abilities.
The workouts will begin with 10-15 minutes of one-on-one coaching from the Elite Team and then followed by a group workout.
For the ski-striding workouts, every athlete will start as a group. Athletes will stride up the mountain for a set period of time, followed by a recovery period. During his or her recovery, the fastest athletes jog down while the slower athletes walk in place. The recovery method allows everyone to gather as a group again for the next uphill section.
For the roller ski workouts, a designated coach will continue to work with the Development Team while the elite team skiers continue with a different workout. All roller ski workouts will be at Ball Mountain Dam for safety purposes and for maximum exposure.
Skiers must apply for this program. Application must include two letters: a letter from the athlete stating what they hope to gain from the program and a letter from their coach addressing the athletes attitude and desire. The fee for the Development program is $100.
Letters should be sent or e-mailed to:
