Boys' Lacrosse Wins State Championship for Second Consecutive Year
The Stratton Mountain School (SMS) Boys’ Lacrosse Team won the DIII Vermont State Championship title for the second consecutive year on June 8, 2017.
“The game was one of the more exciting I’ve ever been a part of. The boys came ready to play and we never trailed in the game” stated SMS Lacrosse Coach, Matt Smith.
In the Thursday evening match against Hartford High School, SMS won the Championship in triple overtime with a final score of 10-9.
“They showed a lot of grit and character by pulling off a win in a championship game hosted by our opponent. It was really hard to communicate over the roar of 500 Hartford fans who seemed to be right on top of us the whole game. It was really nice to witness how close they became as a team this season. Hartford was relentless and well coached. I have a ton of respect for their coach and program and wish there was some way we both could have won. That said, I’m so happy for our boys, many of whom were weeping with joy after the game. It was a special team and season. I’m proud of how the boys learned the game and learned how the sport can teach collaboration toward a common goal” stated Smith.
Stratton Mountain School is an independent boarding and day school that focuses on college preparatory academics and competitive winter sports. Located at the base of Stratton Mountain, SMS serves students in grades 7 – 12.
