Strong Start for SMS Nordic at USSA Junior Nationals
Stratton Mountain School nordic athletes have had a strong start at USSA Junior Nationals in Lake Placid, NY this week.
The Freestyle Interval Start races were held on March 6th at the Olympic Jump Site in Lake Placid. SMS Elite team member, Julia Kern PG‘16, won the U20 women’s race while Ben Ogden ‘18 and Will Koch ‘20 each took the bronze in their respective age groups. SMS had a combined total of four podiums and five top-ten finishes for the Freestyle Interval Start races.
The competition continued on March 8th with the SMS athletes earning four podiums and nine top-ten finishes in the Classic Sprint races. Julia Kern finished 1st in the U20 Women’s race, earning her a second National Title for the week. Kamran Husain ‘16 also earned the Classic Sprint National Title by finishing 1st in the U20 Men’s race.
Fourteen current SMS athletes and four alumni qualified for Junior Nationals. Leading up to the competition SMS Nordic Coach, Matt Boobar, stated, “I can’t wait to see the SMS skiers along with the rest of the crew from all the different clubs and schools, lay it on the line to compete for national championships, medals, All-American finishes, and personal bests!”
The event brings some of the best junior nordic skiers in the nation to compete at the same venue where the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics were held.
Stratton Mountain School is an independent boarding and day school that focuses on college preparatory academics and competitive winter sports. Located at the base of Stratton Mountain, SMS serves students in grades 7 – 12.
