Freestyle Program

The SMS Freestyle Program began in the fall of 2007 when three Freestyle mogul skiers enrolled in the school’s winter term. After months of rigorous training and competition, all three SMS Freestyle Program pioneers had qualified for Eastern Championships and Junior Olympics. Two of the three qualified for U.S. Nationals. The success of these three freestyle mogul skiers inspired five more athletes to join in the fall of 2008, kicking off the beginning of the SMS Freestyle Program. In just three short years, we have found immediate success with our mogul skiing program. Nearly all of the 12 Freestyle participants who have enrolled at SMS have qualified for the Junior Olympics, and most have qualified for U.S. Nationals.

Beginning in the 2010-2011 academic year, SMS integrated Halfpipe and Slopestyle skiing into our fulltime Freestyle Program. Jesse Ramirez-Mallis has signed on to direct and facilitate the Freeride Progam. Jesse spent the past five years at Mount Snow Academy where he coached top-level Freestyle skiers.  Jesse will be a key component in the success of the new Freeride Program, and SMS is eager to ahve him on board.

SMS Freestyle athletes benefit from the same structurally rewarding atmosphere that breads success in our Alpine, Nordic and Snowboarding Programs. SMS is renowned for having the best coaches and the most premier winter sports facilities in the country, and the Freestyle Program will not fall short of this standard. You will have access to our premier training facilities, including the SMS gymnasium, weight room, Sports Science Lab, sports medicine facility, and trampoline gym. More importantly, a fulltime, on-campus coach will guide your training and preparation.
